A Win for Community Empowerment: Grand Rapids Expands Flock Camera Oversight

The City of Grand Rapids' local law that Mayers Strategic Solutions, LLC worked on has been amended to also cover automated license plate readers (ALPRs) like Flock cameras.
This is great news because now Flock and other ALPRs used by any and all city government entities will have to go through the same democratic and community empowerment processes such as complaint and audit systems and data collection, analysis, and publication of ALPR data broken down by race, age, sex, and location.
There will also be opportunities for community members to provide public comments and influence decision-makers through democratic and community empowerment proccesses.
The revised law will go into effect in mid-September.
