We felt that we needed some help with situations that dealt with gun violence. And that dealt with how to help youth in our community, so we invited Carlton Mayers to be our lead advisor.
What was really wonderful about all of it was knowing the expertise that Carlton had. He had already proven himself in other cities to help them with their community situations. So, we were just thrilled to have Carlton here to help us with our particular situation with youth.
Carlton got to know many of the community leaders here in town and got a chance to be aware of what the need was for our community so we put together a plan that was specifically for youth.
At least for myself, it was the first time I've seen the Muncie Police Department, students and children from other community organizations come together sit down and talk to each other the way that Carlton had the meetings set up. It was very interactive and eye-opening to understand what the kids really wanted in their community.
He just understood our need to have something done and he got it done. I appreciate all of his input, his insight, experience, knowledge, compassion and care at one particular middle school.
Yvonne Thompson,
Director of the Human Rights Commission for the City of Muncie
